How to Make a Custom GPT of Yourself in 2026, and What to Build When GPTs Retire

To make a custom GPT of yourself, open the GPT builder in a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, paste instructions in your voice, upload up to 20 files of your work, and test it. Personal plans can no longer create GPTs and every custom GPT retires December 11, 2026, so professionals should build a Timeless AI™ Twin instead.

A custom GPT of yourself is a version of ChatGPT loaded with your instructions, your writing and your expertise, so it answers the way you would. OpenAI introduced GPTs on November 6, 2023, and users created more than 3 million of them in the first two months (OpenAI, 2024). In 2026 the rules changed: personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro, can no longer create or publish new GPTs, and every custom GPT is scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026 (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). Many guides that rank for this question still tell you to buy ChatGPT Plus and click Create, which no longer works.

Below are the builder steps, a paste-ready instruction template, three ways to train ChatGPT on a personal plan, and what survives the move to plugins. Then we cover what no GPT does for a working professional, from your own voice to your booking link and your executor, and how a Timeless AI™ Twin handles each one.

Start building the version of you that answers clients in your own words

Your Persona is free to build: 25 memories, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup, no card, and your free build never expires.

Can you still make a custom GPT of yourself in 2026?

Yes, but only inside a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace whose settings allow it. As of October 2026, OpenAI says new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on personal accounts, although GPTs you built earlier keep working and stay editable where your plan allows (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Building happens on the web only, since the mobile apps let you use GPTs but not create them, and affected Enterprise workspaces lose new GPT creation on October 26, 2026.

The ChatGPT pricing page still lists custom GPTs on the Plus card, but the help center sets the rule and the builder stays closed to Plus. ChatGPT Business plans start at 2 users, so a solo professional pays for two seats just to reach the builder (ChatGPT pricing page, October 2026). On a personal plan, use one of the three options below instead.

How do you make a custom GPT of yourself, step by step?

In an eligible workspace, build on the web in the Configuration view rather than the conversational builder, because a GPT of you depends on the exact words in its fields.

  1. Open Explore GPTs in the ChatGPT sidebar, or go to chatgpt.com/gpts, and select Create.

  2. Switch to the Configuration view.

  3. Name the GPT after yourself and your specialty, such as "Ask [your name] about Roth conversions", and write a description that says who it serves.

  4. Paste your instructions from the template below.

  5. Upload up to 20 knowledge files, each up to 512 MB: your bio, stock answers, transcripts and articles.

  6. Add conversation starters that copy the questions people really ask you.

  7. Set a recommended model and switch on only the capabilities you need: web search, image generation, canvas, Code Interpreter & Data Analysis, or apps.

  8. Test in Preview with your ten most common questions and two hard ones, fix the instructions, then select Create and open Share.

Whatever you build here has to move to a plugin before December 11, 2026, and the selected model, custom actions and sharing settings do not make the move (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Keep your instructions, conversation starters and files in a document you control, so you can rebuild them anywhere, including in a twin of you.

What instructions make ChatGPT write and talk like you?

Good instructions describe who you are, how you sound, what you believe and where your limits are. "Be friendly" changes nothing, while "answer in three short paragraphs and end with one question" changes every reply. Writing is the most common work task people bring to ChatGPT, according to a 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working paper by OpenAI's Economic Research team and Harvard economist David Deming, so sounding like you is most of the job.

Copy this template, replace every bracket, and paste the result into your GPT, your Project or your custom instructions:

  1. You are [full name], a [profession] in [city, state] with [number] years of experience. Speak in the first person, as me.

  2. My audience is [clients, students or patients]. Assume they are smart but new to [your field].

  3. Write the way I write: [short or long] sentences, contractions, plain words. Never use these phrases: [phrases you dislike].

  4. My firm positions are [three to five opinions]. State them plainly and do not hedge.

  5. When a question falls outside [your field], say so in one sentence and suggest who to ask.

  6. Answer in [two to four] short paragraphs. Use a numbered list only for steps that must happen in order.

  7. Treat my files as the source of truth for facts, fees and policies. If they do not cover something, say you are not sure.

  8. Never give [legal, medical or tax] advice on a specific case. Explain the general rule and invite a consultation.

  9. When someone wants to work with me, give them this booking link: [your booking URL].

  10. If someone asks whether they are talking to the real [first name], say you are an AI version of [first name], built from [first name]'s own words.

  11. Match the tone of the example replies in [file name].

The template runs about 1,150 characters before you fill it in, so a tight version fits the 1,500-character custom instructions box on Free and Go (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). OpenAI publishes no limit for the GPT instructions field, but builders on the OpenAI Developer Community forum reported an 8,000-character ceiling in June 2024, enough room to paste three of your real replies as examples. OpenAI's builder guidance agrees: use headings and lists, include brief examples of good and bad outputs, and prefer "do this" lines over long prohibitions.

What files should you give a GPT of yourself?

Your files hold the facts about your work, and your instructions hold the rules for using them. OpenAI recommends keeping tone and workflow in the instructions, putting reference documents in knowledge files, and choosing clear, text-first files over complex layouts (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).

  • Bio and services: who you serve, what you charge, where you work and how people book you.

  • Stock answers: the questions clients ask every week, answered the way you answer them.

  • Writing samples: newsletters, posts and emails with names removed.

  • Transcripts: talks, podcasts and webinars, so the GPT learns how you speak.

  • A do-not-say list: claims you never make and topics you refuse.

Strip client names and anything confidential first, because a GPT can quote its files to anyone who uses it. For firm-wide material rather than your personal voice, read our guide to an AI knowledge base for your business.

How do you train ChatGPT to be you without the GPT builder?

On a personal plan you have three options, and the right one depends on whether the version of you is for your own drafts or for other people. All three live inside ChatGPT and speak in ChatGPT's preset voices.

Option 1: custom instructions (every plan)

In Settings, open Personalization, make sure Enable customization is on, and paste a short version of the template into Custom Instructions. Free and Go accounts can save up to 1,500 characters and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts up to 5,000, and ChatGPT applies them to every chat (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). This is the best choice for drafting emails and posts that sound like you.

Option 2: a Project (every plan)

Create a Project, add your instructions in Project settings and upload your writing samples as files. Project instructions apply only inside that Project and override your global custom instructions, so your "write as me" space stays separate from everything else you do in ChatGPT. Projects come with every plan, Free included (ChatGPT pricing page, October 2026).

Option 3: a plugin with a skill (Go, Plus and Pro)

Plugins are OpenAI's recommended replacement for GPTs. A plugin bundles skills (reusable instructions) with reference files and connected apps, and the ChatGPT pricing page lists creating and sharing plugins on Go, Plus and Pro but not Free. Pick this route when other ChatGPT users should be able to install the version of you.

  1. Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar and install Plugin Creator from the directory.

  2. Start a chat with @plugin-creator and ask for a plugin that answers as you.

  3. Attach your filled-in template as the skill and add your writing samples as reference material.

  4. Test by mentioning the plugin with @ and asking your ten most common questions.

  5. Share it once the replies sound right; a public listing takes a separate submission to OpenAI's plugin directory.

What happens to your custom GPT when GPTs retire?

Your GPT keeps working until December 11, 2026, and then the GPT and its page become inaccessible, though your past conversations stay available. To keep the work, select Migrate to plugin in My GPTs when the option reaches your account; Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until February 11, 2027 (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).

  • What transfers: your instructions become a skill, knowledge files become reference files, and connected apps come across as apps.

  • What does not: the selected model, custom actions (rebuilding them may need a custom MCP server), sharing settings and unpublished drafts.

  • What changes afterward: the plugin starts private, existing users get no automatic access, and the original GPT turns read-only.

If you shared a GPT of yourself publicly, every link you posted stops working at retirement. Point regular users to your website and booking link before December, because migration gives none of them access to the new plugin.

What can't a custom GPT of yourself do?

A GPT can imitate how you write, but it cannot stand in for you where a professional needs it most. The plugin replacement shares these limits, because both run inside ChatGPT on OpenAI's terms.

  • Your voice. ChatGPT Voice offers preset voices such as Juniper, Ember, Cove and Maple, and none of them is a clone of you (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).

  • Your website. People open a GPT through a link or the GPT Store inside ChatGPT, so visitors leave your site to reach it.

  • Model changes. OpenAI swaps the models behind ChatGPT on its own schedule (the October 2026 pricing page lists GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 models plus legacy models), and migration drops the model you picked. More in will your AI survive model changes.

  • Ownership. OpenAI's Terms of Use (effective January 1, 2026) let you keep your input and own the output, but the GPT itself is a platform feature that OpenAI is retiring. More in do you own your AI clone.

  • Succession. The same terms bar you from making your account available to anyone else, and OpenAI deletes a deleted account's data within 30 days, so no colleague or executor can take over your GPT if your account closes or you die.

  • Best for drafting in your own style: custom instructions or a Project, which every ChatGPT plan includes.

  • Best for a team tool inside ChatGPT: a plugin, or a GPT migrated before December 11, 2026.

  • Best for clients, students or patients meeting you: Timeless AI™ Twin, which answers on your own website and sends people to your booking link.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open-source standard that AI applications such as ChatGPT and Claude use to connect to outside systems (Model Context Protocol documentation, 2026), so other AI assistants can ask your twin questions and read who you are. How do you build an AI twin of yourself with Timeless AI™?

Build your Persona first, free, then switch on Timeless AI™ Twin with Timeless Pro and open the doors you want. The stories, positions and stock answers you gathered for a GPT are exactly what your Persona needs.

  1. Create your free Timeless AI™ account, no card: 25 memories, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup, and the free build never expires.

  2. Build your Persona from your own memories, stories and positions, so your Persona answers in the first person, in your own words.

  3. Record your voice. Creating your voice and your first listen are free, and so is your first Persona Video, made from one 30-second recording.

  4. Upgrade to Timeless Pro (Eternal plus Timeless AI™ Twin) and add your booking link.

  5. Open your doors: one script tag on your website, the API for your own app, and MCP for AI assistants.

  6. Name your executor and Trusted Contacts, and choose which doors keep answering after a verified death.

A badge names your twin, and when a visitor asks directly, your twin says in one line that they are talking to your twin. Typed questions get text replies, and twin conversations are stored. Our Timeless AI™ Twin guide walks through each door, and our guides to making an AI version of yourself and personal AI cover the rest.

Example: say you charge $150 a session. Timeless Pro costs US$599 billed yearly, against $719.88 for 12 months at US$59.99, which saves you $120.88. The yearly plan covers its cost once your twin sends four extra clients to your booking link (4 x $150 = $600). Legacy and Eternal plans are on our pricing page.

Who controls your twin after you die?

You decide that while you are alive and working, by naming your executor and Trusted Contacts. Executor Lock™ is the patent-pending governance layer from Idy®, which has 78 patents pending, including two international PCT applications filed in August 2026. After a verified death, each twin door starts switched off, the doors you chose keep answering, and your twin passes to your executor. Your Persona is locked as a perfect snapshot, so nobody can edit, retrain or impersonate you after that.

Build the version of you that your clients will meet, starting free today

Build your Persona free, then add Timeless AI™ Twin with Timeless Pro at US$59.99 a month or US$599 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a custom GPT on ChatGPT Plus?+

Not a new one. As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center says personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro, cannot create or publish new GPTs. GPTs you built earlier keep working until custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026.

Do I need ChatGPT Business to make a custom GPT?+

Yes. As of October 2026, only ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can create new custom GPTs, and only when workspace settings allow it. ChatGPT Business plans start at 2 users, so even a solo professional needs two seats to reach the builder.

When do custom GPTs retire?+

OpenAI has scheduled custom GPTs to retire on December 11, 2026, and says the transition affects all ChatGPT plans. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until February 11, 2027. At retirement, custom GPTs and their pages become inaccessible, but past conversations remain available.

What replaces custom GPTs?+

OpenAI recommends plugins, which bundle skills (reusable instructions), reference files and connected apps. When you migrate, the GPT's instructions become a skill and its knowledge files are copied across. The selected model, custom actions and sharing settings do not carry over.

How long can GPT instructions be?+

OpenAI publishes no limit for the GPT instructions field, but builders on the OpenAI Developer Community forum reported an 8,000-character ceiling in June 2024. ChatGPT custom instructions are capped at 1,500 characters on Free and Go and 5,000 characters on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu.

How do I make ChatGPT write like me without a GPT?+

Paste a short style template into Settings, Personalization, Custom Instructions, which works on every plan and applies to every chat. For a dedicated space, create a Project with its own instructions and your writing samples as files, since Project instructions override your global ones inside that Project.

Can a custom GPT talk in my own voice?+

No. ChatGPT Voice uses preset voices, such as Juniper, Ember and Cove, and none of them is a clone of you. Timeless AI™ Twin replies in your own cloned voice when a visitor speaks to your twin on your website.

Can I put my custom GPT on my own website?+

A custom GPT runs inside ChatGPT, where people open it through a link or the GPT Store, so visitors leave your site to use it. Timeless AI™ Twin installs on your website with one script tag and also answers through an API and inside AI assistants over MCP.

How much does Timeless AI™ Twin cost?+

Timeless AI™ Twin comes with Timeless Pro, which costs US$59.99 a month or US$599 a year and includes everything in Eternal. Building your Persona is free, with 25 memories, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup, no card, and a free build that never expires.
